Why does the heating not go off?
Although you have turned down the thermostat, you notice: the heating does not go out anymore? This can have different reasons. In most cases the focus is on the thermostat valve. Possible reasons for the heating to run continuously:
- the thermostatic valve is stuck
- the thermostatic head is broken
- the thermostatic valve is broken
When the valve is stuck – the heating no longer turns off
The heating does not turn off in your house anymore? Then it is often because the thermostatic valve is defective. In some cases this is stuck. If the thermostatic valve is stuck, this usually means that the pin on the valve can no longer be pressed in properly. Normally, the heating valve opens when the pin slips out of the valve when it is turned up. the heating system does not go off when this pin on the valve remains in the pushed-in position. If this happens, then no more appropriate regulation is possible.
Step-by-step solution: loosen the valve pin
With the following simple steps, you can easily undo the pin on the heating valve yourself. If you do not have the appropriate tools at hand, or if you are not confident enough to do so, you can also consult a plumber.
- Unscrew the thermostatic head. To do this, first turn the thermostatic valve to zero and loosen the so-called union nut. As a rule, you can do this by hand. In case of doubt, a pipe wrench can be used.
- Under the thermostat head you can now see the pin. With the help of a pair of pliers, slowly pull out the thermostat. To make it more mobile again, you should pull it several times and push it in again. Under certain circumstances, a little grease may also help as a lubricant.
- If it is still difficult to move the pin, tap the metal pin very carefully with a hammer.
- Move the pin again with the combination pliers.
- Put the thermostat head back on the valve. The markings on it should correspond to those on the valve.
- Turn the thermostat up and then back down to test if the heater can be turned back down as well.
Replace the thermostatic adjustment head
The heating does not turn off anymore, although the metal pin is not stuck? Then it may be the thermostatic head that is at fault. This is normally used to set the desired temperature. However, if the head is defective, the flow of the heating water will no longer be regulated properly. This in turn affects the heat output via the radiators. To change the thermostat, the following steps are required:
- Set the old thermostat to the highest level.
- Loosen the clamp or union nut using the screw behind it.
- Set the new thermostat also to the highest level.
- The set level must point upwards when you now carefully place the new adjustment head on the clamp.
- Tighten the screw again.
Replace defective thermostatic valve
In spite of all efforts you still notice: The heating does not go off any more? It also happens that the thermostatic valve needs to be replaced. This is the case if the valve is too large and the heating water flows through the radiator, even if it is actually closed. Then the valve itself must be replaced. However, this is a much more complicated procedure, which at best is carried out professionally by an installer. Because water can leak out. In addition, sealing problems are possible. Especially in a rented apartment, you should not do anything yourself in such a case. A defective heater or. a heating failure is indeed a reason for a rent reduction. But be careful as a tenant: inform your landlord first before you take further steps.
The heating is warm in spite of level 1? A defect is not always to blame
In most cases you can recognize that the heating does not go out anymore by the fact that the radiator is still warm to hot despite the thermostat being turned off. But what does it actually mean when this is turned off or down? How cold or warm is it in the room?? In principle, the desired room temperature is always determined by the current temperature in the room in question. On the normal thermostat there are digits and no degree numbers. Therefore, these must be broken down accordingly. This is what the numbers on the radiator thermostat usually mean:
If you set the radiator to three, the room should be at 20 degrees Celsius. This means that at that moment the valve reacts and allows exactly as much heating water to flow through the radiator as is needed to maintain the set temperature. The actual value of the room temperature plays a decisive role here. If there are only twelve degrees Celsius in the room, the heating will run longer to reach 20 degrees Celsius than at an initial value of 16 degrees.
If you leave the house now, the room can cool down considerably due to open doors and open windows. Even if you have previously turned down the radiators, they may still be warm on your return. In this case, however, there need be no defect. It is warm when the difference between the actual temperature in the room and the previously set desired temperature is equalized. If the thermostat is set to one and the temperature falls below twelve degrees Celsius during this time, the valve opens and hot heating water flows into the radiator. If you have the impression in such a case that the heating does not go out any more, you do not have to do anything as a rule. Unless the radiators are disproportionately hot. In this case, there may also be an incorrect setting on the control system. Also check if the thermostat valve head was put on incorrectly and the numbers do not correspond to the settings.
