Arrive in amsterdam – and then?

If you want to go from Amsterdam Central Station to Amsterdam Noord, you can take one of the free IJ ferries, which will take you across the water called IJ. There are the following ferries:

Central station to Buiksloterweg (901/907, 5 minutes, day and night, 5-14 x per hour)

Central station to the IJplein (902, 5 minutes, 3-8 times per hour)

Central station to NDSM shipyard (906, 14 minutes, 2-4 times per hour)

As I said before: the ferries are free, bicycles can be taken, not cars

From the central station continue by bus

If you arrive in Amsterdam at Central Station and then want to take the bus z.B. to the hotel, then it is good to know that the bus station is above the central station. You take the exit to the IJ side (IJ-zide), so towards water. Before you cross the street to the IJ, escalators lead upwards. There, all bus stops are quite well signposted and have a display of departure times.

From the main station onwards by streetcar

The streetcars (in Dutch streetcar) leave in front of the train station – and on the downtown side. There is also the metro station.

Walking from the main train station towards the city center

When you come out of the Amsterdam Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal) (please go in the direction of the Centrum and not to the IJ-Zijde, because that’s where the water is), you have reached the Amsterdamer Central station at your back. In front of you is the. But where exactly do you find what? Maybe the following description can help you a little bit for the first orientation (of course there are stores, coffee shops and pubs everywhere in Amsterdam, but in these areas they pile up):

  • Shopping: Walk straight ahead towards Dam and Kalverstraat
  • Party: On the left you go to the Wallen (red light district), to the well-known coffee shops and pubs
  • Atmosphere: On the right you come to a quieter part of the canals and further into the Jordaan neighborhood

Arrival Amsterdam Zuid station

If you come by train and get off in Amsterdam Zuid (South), you can easily and comfortably get from this station to the center and the Museum Square (Museumplein) by streetcar (Tram) number 5. The streetcar leaves in front of the station. To get to the streetcar stop you have to cross the square in front of the station and then take a staircase on the right that leads up to the streetcar stop. Do not cross the tracks, but take streetcar number 5 in the direction of Centraal Station at the stop facing the station. Tickets are available from the driver.
