Berlin Catholics react to abuse report "How can one educate people in this faith now??"
Many Catholics are outraged by the way the responsible clerics are dealing with the Munich abuse report. This is also clearly noticeable in the Catholic parish of Sankt Annen in Berlin-Steglitz.
Sankt Annen is located in the Berlin district of Lichterfelde and is a small, rather middle-class community. Here, too, many are horrified by the news surrounding the Munich abuse report.
"I am actually almost at a loss for words" says Maike Brokat. "The word catastrophe is actually an understatement. I see this as a worldwide failure." A Catholic who has been active in her parish for many years, she is particularly outraged by the emeritus Pope Benedict XVI., who was a cardinal in Munich for a long time and was obviously caught lying. Maike Brokat would have liked to see the cases of abuse followed up consistently and measures taken to show genuine remorse. But she fears that if all cases were uncovered, "the church in Germany would be emptied out.

Maike Brokat, on the other hand, is currently thinking about leaving almost every day. She no longer has any hope that the church can be reformed from within: "I believe that the church as an institution must collapse so that it can recreate itself."

I believe that something divine is always present when people do good things. For this purpose ideological (i.e. religious or humanistic) associations are quite conducive. Apparently the (non-)reaction of the church to the clarification of the abuse crimes is for some worse than the abuse itself. The fact that there is abuse in the church at all is closely related to celibacy. But since the church is condemned to dogmatism, nothing can change.
