Bed squeaks – what can you do about it?

There are many things that can deprive you of well-deserved rest at night. Noise resp. persistent noises are certainly part of it. A squeaking bed is a frequent disturber of the peace in the bedroom. Besides squeaking, a creaking, creaking or grinding noise can also come from the bed.

We have dealt intensively with the subject of "squeaky bed" in the sleep magazine. We have identified causes and reasons why the bed makes disturbing noises when it is in use. In addition, we have of course looked for solutions and summarized them for you, so that you know what you can do against a squeaky bed.

What exactly creaks or squeaks on the bed?

Before you can solve the problem with the squeaking bed, you must first find out why the bed squeaks in the first place or. at which point the bed makes noises.

To do this, it is advisable to first remove the mattress from the bed and lay it on the floor. Now you can try out whether the mattress makes a noise when you lie or sit down on it and move around. – The mattress, however, is rarely the reason for a nightly squeaking concert.

Now you can check the position of the slatted frame in the bed frame – provided, of course, that it is a bed in conventional construction and not a box spring bed or a bed with fixed upholstery. Is there any evidence here that the slatted frame may have too much play, causing it to rub against the bed frame under load?! If nothing is visible here, the slatted frame should also be removed from the bed frame and placed on the floor. Afterwards also here the "solo test" by a pressure load of the slatted frame from above. – If disturbing noises or squeaking occur when the slatted frame is loaded, the "culprit" has been found, if not, the next step is the frame of the bed.

When checking the bed frame, it is recommended to first check the corners of the frame or if necessary. test the corner posts of the bed by shaking them. After the corners, the inspection of the bed frame is continued on the support slats for the slatted frame (and to a certain extent also for the mattress), by loading them – pressing on them. When you have found out at which place or places it is necessary to develop noise or. squeaking occurs, you can start to solve the problem.

Besides the frame elements, the squeaking of the bed can also be caused by a wobbly stand of the bed frame. If the bed wobbles because one leg is not touching the floor or not touching the floor properly. One should provide here for an appropriate compensation by a suitable wedge or the like.

Bed squeaks – culprit bed frame

To remedy the squeaking or creaking of a bed directly in the area of the bed frame, it is advisable to first look at which fastening materials (e.g., the screws) are used to fix the bed. B. What kind of screw?) the frame has been mounted. In order to eliminate the squeak quickly and easily, you should equip yourself with the appropriate tools for the job. Namely, if the rack has "play" in itself and z. B. rubbing wood against wood, it is usually sufficient to remove the screws in question o. a. (re)tighten or. tighten. If screws cannot be tightened properly, it may be useful to use a washer so that there is no clearance between the frame and the screw.

If the creaking or squeaking of the bedstead persists despite tightening the screws, all connections in the affected area of the bed should be loosened. Then the elements of the connection (opening in the bed element, surface on the bed element, screw / fastener) should be lubricated. The following means can be considered as lubricants:

Soap / curd soap
piece, dry used for rubbing the affected surfaces and areas on the bed frame

Kerosene
Waste product from the petroleum industry and resembles wax, commercially available as a bar, with which surfaces can be easily rubbed / lubricated

candle wax
z. B. can be rubbed on from candle residues in a similar way to kerosene wax

WD-40
widely used multifunctional spray / penetrating oil – is simply sprayed on, is well suited for lubricating metal beds, although it will dry out sooner or later

Silicone lubricant / bearing grease
can be purchased in hardware stores or specialized shops, apply thinly

For beds made of solid wood or with other delicate surfaces, be judicious in your choice of lubricant. – Especially if lubrication of the bed frame should be necessary in a visible place.

After lubricating the affected bed elements, the frame should be mounted again. Care should be taken to ensure that all screws / fasteners are properly tightened. Before putting the slatted frame and the mattress back into the frame, check whether the squeaking has been eliminated by the greasing and shake again the bed elements that have become conspicuous previously.

If the bed frame has wooden connectors like z. B. If the bed is squeaking because a leg is not touching the floor or is not touching the floor properly, you can use tape instead of lubrication. on the wooden connectors.

If the bed still squeaks, you should listen again very carefully to see if another area of the bed is responsible for the noise. If you have come to a conclusion, you should also loosen the connections there, lubricate them and screw them tight again before you test again whether the bed still squeaks or creaks..

Bed squeaks – culprit bed frame and slatted frame

If the bed makes noises and squeaks, creaks or creaks because the slatted frame can move awkwardly on the support on the bed frame, there are also some things you can do to remedy the situation:

Any gaps and gaps should be closed on a test basis to check whether then the squeaking of the bed will stop. For this one can bspw. Use old shirts, socks, scarves or fabric remnants. In addition, cork has also proven to be a gap filler.

It can also be helpful to stick self-adhesive felt glides (for furniture) from the hardware store under the slatted base, so that the squeaking of the bed is a thing of the past.

Bed squeaks – culprit slatted frame

If the slatted frame has proven to be the culprit for the squeaking in bed, there are still several possibilities for the noise coming from the slatted base. Depending on why the slatted frame causes squeaking or creaking, there are different tips on what you can do to fix the squeaky bed again.

If the springwood slats are mounted in movable caps made of rubber or caoutchouc, these may have become brittle over the course of time, causing noise to develop. With a lot of effort, you can try to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep again in such a case. – To do this, completely disassemble the slatted frame, treat each cap individually with talcum powder, baby powder or silicone spray and reassemble the frame.

In the case of adjustable slatted frames with a movable headboard and / or footboard, the cause of the squeaking of the bed can also be found in the metal fittings of the adjustment. Here one should (regularly) lubricate and/or. oil and check the correct functionality of all elements of adjustment.

Also from the middle zone adjustment or middle zone reinforcement of the slatted frame a noise development can proceed. However, this usually results in a rattling rather than a squeaking noise. The remedy is a repositioning of the sliders and, if necessary. a fixation of the slipped resp. slipping slider with adhesive tape.

Bed squeaks – mattress is the culprit

Nowadays, the mattress is very rarely responsible for squeaking in bed. In the past, when Bonell spring mattresses with undamped steel springs were still predominantly used, it was more common for these to tend to squeak, especially during longer periods of use. Who uses thus an older mattress with Bonell spring core, should examine also these exactly, if a nocturnal noise nuisance proceeds from the bed.
