The 10 most common error messages in windows 10 – how to fix them

Your PC is once again not doing what it should or is on strike completely? You will be presented with pop-up windows describing the problem in such a cryptic way that you would need a whole computer science degree to understand what is wrong?

Do not panic! Error messages or error codes with Windows are, as with all operating systems, completely normal. The appearance of such a code is far from being a reason to reinstall the entire system or even go to a PC specialist. With a few clicks you can quickly find out what is wrong with your computer and – in the best case – solve the problem in the same step.

How do error messages in Windows 10 arise in the first place??

Windows likes to communicate with its users. Time and again, windows or small speech bubbles pop up in which the system wants to tell you something or even demands a decision from you. But in doing so, Windows sometimes expresses itself so awkwardly that even advanced PC users often ask themselves: what does my computer actually want from me?

First of all, it is of course interesting how Windows errors can occur at all. In order to do this, you first have to be aware of what an operating system actually does on a daily basis.

Windows 10 as an operating system must be able to work without problems on end devices from different manufacturers. There are also thousands of programs from countless manufacturers, which all have different features and functionality. In addition, there are many different components, modules and individual parts, which make each PC unique. And then, of course, there is malicious software whose only goal is to paralyze or even damage your computer as effectively as possible.

Due to this variety of conceivable combination possibilities between hardware and software it is absolutely impossible for the manufacturers of an operating software to guarantee an absolutely error-free program sequence in all conceivable cases.

Note

An operating system free of errors in all areas cannot exist for these reasons.

Overview: The 10 most common error messages in Windows 10 with suggested solutions

In the following, the most frequently occurring error messages in Windows 10 are explained in more detail. With our step-by-step instructions, you can find the right solutions for the most popular error codes in Windows 10.

1. Error message: Windows 10 does not boot or is frozen

If the server can no longer be started up, the first shock is great. When Windows 10 hangs, the operating system continues to run in the background, but the mouse and keyboard no longer respond to the user’s input.

Before trying back and forth for a long time, you should try a clean restart of Windows 10 as a troubleshooter. However, this does not mean an ordinary reboot!

To do this, open the Run dialog with the key combination Windows + R.

Enter the code"shutdown /g /f /t 0" and confirm it with the Enter key.

Explanation for real computer professionals:

  • /g shuts down the computer completely and restarts it.
  • /f closes all open programs and applications.
  • /t sets the time (0 = execute immediately).

Often, this settles the matter and no further steps need to be taken to solve the problem. But it can also be that this process repeats itself more often. On the one hand, this could be due to certain programs that cause the computer to crash, but also external influences (such as dust) can cause the PC to freeze or crash.

Here you can find helpful tips on what to do when Windows suddenly stops starting.

2. Error message: Start menu no longer works

The start menu in Windows 10 can stop working for many different reasons. First check if there are any updates or upgrades available. If this is the case, these should be installed in any case. Often the start menu works again after performing this step.

If the Start menu of your Windows computer nevertheless no longer starts or remains frozen, a clean restart is also a good idea here. For this purpose you can also use the task manager.

Open the task manager with the key combinationCtrl + Alt + Del.

On the screen can now right down by means of pressed Shift key a clean shutdown can be triggered.

If the Task Manager cannot help either, it is often helpful to take a closer look at the Start menu settings.

Here’s how to change the Start menu settings:

Open the settings with the key combination Windows + i.

Now click on the button"Personalization" and select the menu item "Start" on the left off.

Activate the option" on the rightShow more tiles in Start menu". After this step, check whether the Start menu works again. If this is not the case, disable the following three options:"Show occasional suggestions in the Start menu, Show most used apps and Show recently added apps". After that activate the options right away.

Check again if the start menu now works again. If not, activate also still the point"Use start menu in full screen mode" and check the start menu again. After that the option can be deactivated again.

If you are still concerned about the start menu, it may be helpful to delete all user accounts from the computer and restart it. However, be sure to create a backup of the files from the deleted user account in advance so that they are not lost.

If the start menu still doesn’t work now, you can fix it in safe mode again. You can read more about this in our guide on the subject of safe mode.

3. Error message: CDs/DVDs are not played back

Even though installations are done much more through online sources these days, many people still rely on CDs and DVDs as their installation source. Especially those who want to share data without the risk of tampering take advantage of the security benefits of these disks. It is all the more annoying if the computer does not recognize or deactivate this option. Do not play.

Although there is a file on practically every CD, from which Windows can read which file should be started, CDs and DVDs today hardly start automatically on PCs or notebooks with Windows 10. The autostart of some programs is prevented for security reasons by various anti-virus programs on the computer.

This way you can check the settings for your computer regarding Windows Autostart:

Open the device settings by clicking on"Start – Settings – Devices" click.

Set the switch"Use automatic playback for all media and devices" On.

Afterwards set the option" in the list field removable diskOpen folder to view files" a.

Note

If autoplay is enabled, but still does not work, then the installed virus scanner, which blocks autoplay, may be the cause. Open your antivirus program from the Start menu. Look there for a setting to autostart removable media and allow it manually.

In addition, there are several scenarios that can lead to the CD/DVD drive itself being the source of the error that sabotages the startup of the medium. Optical drives are very sensitive, so driver errors can occur very easily.

How to check the CD/DVD drive for damage:

Right-click on the Start button at the bottom left and open the"Device Manager".

In the device manager now open the category"DVD/CD-ROM drives" and right-click on the drive in question.

Switch on the option"Update driver software" on a. If this does not bring success, use "Functionuninstall". After restarting the computer, you can install the drive again.

After the described measures an inserted CD or DVD should be able to be opened at least manually.

4. Error message: Problems with updates

The 10 most common error messages in Windows 10 - How to fix them

In the settings you can see under "Updates and security", whether new updates are available

The system updates from Microsoft usually install themselves automatically. However, it depends on whether you have given your PC permission to perform updates on its own. If an update is installed, corresponding dialog information is displayed in a blue event display. These show how far the installation of the update is already and which part of it is currently in installation.

It is not uncommon for an error code to occur during the update process. Often the first aid measures (namely a clean restart of the computer) are sufficient to solve the problem. Then the installation of the update is started again.

Microsoft provides a large update package for Windows 10 about twice a year. These are used to provide the operating system with the latest security standards, making it less prone to errors. You can check whether there are already new updates for your computer in the Start menu under the settings in the folder "Update and security" see.

5. Error message: WLAN does not work

Many users report a particularly annoying problem that often occurs after installing Windows 10. The WLAN does not work anymore! This can have several reasons. For example, the WLAN adapter may simply be deactivated, an incorrect driver may have been installed, or the router may not have been set up correctly. Also, old WLAN sticks no longer work under Windows 10.

A common reason for the failure of the WLAN connection in Windows 10 is the update with the code KB3201845. This contains an error which is transferred to the computer by installing the update. However, Microsoft reacted quickly and released the update KB3206632 as a repair measure, which Windows 10 should install automatically.

It can also happen that the network adapter belonging to the WLAN is simply deactivated.

How to find out if the network adapter is enabled for your WLAN

Press the key combination Windows + R, to open the run dialog.

A prompt appears. Type"devmgmt.msc" in the input field and confirm it with the Enter key.

Now the device manager opens. Now search under the item"Network adapters" Your WLAN adapter. Disabled devices Windows marks by a small black arrow, which is directed downwards. If such an arrow appears next to your WLAN adapter, click it once with the right mouse button and select"Activate".

Attention!

If the WLAN adapter you are using has a wrong name or a yellow warning triangle with an exclamation mark, then there are probably problems with the driver.

6. Error message: Taskbar has disappeared or cannot be operated

Among the many small bugs in Windows 10 are also problems with the taskbar. Many users do not open programs in the taskbar when they are clicked on, although the context menu can be displayed by right-clicking on them. Sometimes the taskbar does not respond at all or has disappeared completely.

First of all – as with almost all problems concerning Windows 10 – I have to look for updates. If any are available, they should be installed as a first step, thus upgrading the operating system to the latest version. After that, restart the computer and check if the taskbar works again.

If this is not the case, there are other possible solutions to fix the problems with the taskbar. The fact that the taskbar does not work can be z.B. may also be due to Windows Explorer.

Restart Windows Explorer? How to do it:

Open the task manager as described above.

2If only a small empty window appears here, click on the lettering" in the lower left cornerMore details".

In the "Processes" tab select the Windows Explorer entry and then click on the button in the bottom right cornerRestart". Then try to open the desired program in the taskbar.

If the taskbar no longer works, a program running in the background can also be to blame. In principle, this includes all programs that make changes to the user interface of the operating system.

However, most often taskbar problems occur due to antivirus programs. In this case, the program in question should first be removed from the autostart configuration. Also, the virus scanner can be deactivated for a short time to check whether the supposed program is really the trigger for it.

If you are not sure which program is the trigger for the problems with the taskbar, proceed according to the exclusion procedure:

First remove all programs from the autostart, which could be responsible for the problem with the taskbar.

Restart your computer and then test if the taskbar is restored. If so, add the programs back to the autostart one by one and then test if the taskbar still works. Repeat this step until the malicious program is found. This should then also be uninstalled.

7. Error message: Black screen

Many Windows 10 users experience the problem of a black screen appearing after booting up the computer or after logging back in after a locked desktop. In most cases, only the pointer of the computer mouse is clearly visible anymore.

Cause for the black screen is that Windows 10 looks for the screen at the wrong port. Therefore, no image can appear and the screen remains black. Often the error occurs when the computer with Windows 10 has two screens connected. However, it can also occur in single-monitor systems.

How to get rid of the black screen with two monitors:

Shut down Windows 10.

Remove the cable from the second screen.

Perform a clean reboot using only one monitor.

After the system has booted up and the desktop is visible, connect the second monitor as usual.

How to get rid of the black screen on a monitor:

Press the key combination Windows + P and confirm the input with Enter. This causes Windows 10 to switch back and forth between the different screen modes.

Also try the key combination Alt + F4. This normally closes the currently open program.

If you are working on a laptop, it may help to close it and then open it again.

It can also happen that the so-called black screen appears during the installation of Windows 10. If this is the case, the installation will still continue in the background, but invisibly. It can then take up to a few hours for the installation to be completed.

Tip

If after 3 to 5 hours after starting the installation still nothing happens, the installation is probably stuck. Then turn off the PC and remove all unneeded connected devices (such as z.B. Printers, USB sticks, etc.). Leave only mouse, monitor and keyboard connected and restart the device.

8. Error message: Bluescreen crash

If the screen of your PC suddenly turns blue, this is referred to as a blue screen crash among experts. The # is a description of a whole category of error codes in Microsoft Windows operating systems. If a critical system error occurs, the activation of the system is stopped and the user interface of the computer is completely replaced by a blue screen. The error information is displayed on this in white letters.

In most cases, these activation errors are triggered by errors in device drivers or in the hardware. A bluescreen can also occur if the RAM has been upgraded. Under certain circumstances this is faulty and thus causes program and blue screen crashes. Bluescreens may also appear if a new driver has been installed in Windows 10, but it does not match the hardware or does not work with Windows 10.

Note

If the device manager does not show any problems, the problem may be due to recently installed software. Uninstall all these programs and check if the blue screen is gone. But usually software is not responsible for bluescreen crashes.

You can read about what you can do to get your PC running again in the event of a bluescreen crash in our guide to bluescreens.

9. Error message: Temporary profile prevents data access

In Windows 10, some users experience the problem that they are only logged in with a temporary profile after an upgrade. Desktop and Start menu cannot be used in this case, because the data is still linked to the old user profile.

The problem of a temporary profile often occurs in Windows 10 when upgrading to Windows 10 from a previous operating system. Mostly, faulty entries in the registry database (also: registry) are considered to be the cause of the activation error. In this case, Windows 10 fails to log in and tries to work around the problem by logging the user in with a temporary profile. However, this means that you can no longer access your own files from the original user profile.

In most cases, the problem with the temporary profile can be easily solved by restarting the computer. This process may have to be performed several times.

10. Error message: serious error

Recently, users of Windows 10 have reported an error message that appears when booting the operating system. Instead of the computer booting up, the following error message appears on the user’s screen:

"Fatal error – Start menu and Cortana does not work". We will do our best to fix the problem by the time you log in again."

However, if you now click on the button"Log off now" click to restart the server, the error reappears at the next startup.

So far, it is not yet clear exactly what causes this code. However, users who use multiple accounts on their computer report that the problem does not occur in general, but only when logging in with certain accounts. Therefore, it can be assumed that Windows tries to synchronize the user’s Microsoft account when starting the operating system and there are problems with this.

How to solve the difficult error with Windows 10

However, despite the ominous name, the solution to this problem is quite simple:

When the error message appears, press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Del. How to get to the lock screen of your computer.

At the bottom right you can now see the power button. Once you click on this, three choices will appear:"Save energy, shutdown and Reboot".

Press the option"Shutdown" and hold down the Shift key during this time.

The computer now shuts down completely. Start it up again afterwards and the error code has disappeared.

Conclusion:

Computer problems are annoying and usually occur when you don’t need them. If the WLAN connection suddenly breaks down while sending an important e-mail or Windows only displays error messages after installing a required program, good advice is expensive and fast help is needed.

Windows 10 is less error-prone than its predecessor versions, but it is by no means error-free. There are numerous known error codes, but these can often be eliminated with a few simple mouse clicks. For this reason, it is important that users regularly update their operating systems. These do not only eliminate error sources to a large extent, but protect the PC also against other damage and possible computer viruses.
