"The phone number you have dialed is not in use …" – This may be the reason – When dialing a number with a mobile or landline phone, in some cases you get an error message instead of a connection. Very often one gets then only three beeps and the announcement that the desired call number is not assigned. This can be very annoying. So asks a user at GuteFrage exemplary for this problem:
…I have been trying to call my friend on his cell phone for the past 1 hour. But they keep saying that the dialed number is not in service. What is the reason? Have checked the mobile number several times, it is 100% correct. Did he turn off the cell phone, take out the sim card or is he in a dead zone? I hope someone can give me the answer =/…
And another user writes in the forum of O2:
…I have a problem in reaching some important call partners or. Customers cannot reach these business partners. Unfortunately, I cannot post the destination numbers here in the public forum, but I can gladly provide them upon request via PM. The problem is that I these phone numbers from the mobile network of O2 are not reachable. Instead of the ringing tone I only get the announcement mentioned in the title above. However, statement of the robot is wrong. The number can be reached via T-Mobile / Vodafone (at the same time) and can also be reached via div. Fixed lines reachable…
On the Internet, you can sometimes find different announcements:
- The number you have dialed is not assigned.
- The dialed number not assigned
- The phone number not assigned.
- No connection under this number.
- No connection on this phone number.
These announcements and error messages all stand for the same problem: A number has been called which is not known and the telecommunication system does not know with whom it should establish a connection. Unfortunately, this does not allow connections to the corresponding subscriber and in most cases both calls and SMS are not possible.
What reasons can lead to an unassigned call number?
First of all, let’s know when this message does not appear: You will not get this message if your phone is in a dead zone or has bad reception in general. We have put together some tips in this article. Even switched off devices do not lead to this error message. There will be other error messages (e.g. that the called party is not available or that the number has been disconnected). is available). Unassigned phone numbers do not have anything to do with it. This error indicates instead that there is a much more fundamental problem and already the assignment of the phone number can not be done.
This can have many different reasons:
- You have dialed the wrong number and have a number error in the dialed number. The system does not actually know the number. Here it helps to check the phone number and enter it correctly if necessary. Of course, this solution only works if you do not retrieve the number from the memory – then it should be correct in itself.
- When calling from abroad, the country codes are not always assigned correctly. If you save the contacts without the German area code, for example, you will get an error message when you try to call the number abroad. In these cases it helps to put 049 in front as the area code for Germany. In such situations you should try not to retrieve the number from the memory, but to enter it manually again (of course with the appropriate country code).
- There is a fault in the network. In the fixed network as well as in the mobile networks of Telekom, Vodafone and O2/Eplus, there are always failures in which the technology can no longer correctly assign the phone numbers. In these cases, there is not much you can do and you have to wait for the company in question to fix the problem. Such failures rarely last more than 24 hours, so in most cases you can talk to the subscriber again the next day. In such cases, you can usually inform yourself quite well on the Internet, because then you are not the only one affected, but there are usually several thousand users who have this disturbance. On Facebook and various fault portals, you can often find reports from other users who are also affected, and then you know for sure that it is only a technical fault. However, there is unfortunately very little that consumers can do in such cases. Instead, goods is announced until the corresponding network operator has found the error and fixed the fault.
- The number was ported. If you sign a new contract, you often want to keep your phone number and therefore the phone number has to be ported to the new provider. In the course of this change, it often happens on the day of porting that the number can no longer be reached. However, this failure is usually only temporary and after a few hours the number can be reached again without problems and without error messages. As a rule, in these cases the number should be available again after 24 hours. If this is not the case, it is probably not due to the porting – or something has gone thoroughly wrong with the number porting (which unfortunately can also happen from time to time).
- The number has been cancelled or blocked. Without porting, the number is no longer available at the end of a cell phone or telephone contract, and then you also get this error message. Since the contract was terminated, there is no time window, so it is possible that the number is permanently or at least for many months no longer available. In addition, it may happen that the number has been assigned to a new owner – so you may be calling a stranger.
- In case of commercial numbers it can happen that another company is responsible for the technology. If it should come there to errors, possibly also all customers of this enterprise are no longer attainable. Even in such cases (which are fortunately very rare), unfortunately, the only thing that helps is to wait until the corresponding company fixes the error.
So there are a lot of possible causes for this message and unfortunately you can’t be sure which error is behind it exactly.

This problem occurs here in the Braunschweig area since a few days again. Obviously the routing tables of the different providers are not aligned anymore.
If I call my parents (at HTP) from my O2 landline, it says: "The number you have dialed is not in use."But you can call me on my landline.
But it is also bizarre that I can reach the same phone number from the O2 mobile network without any problems!
Their neighbors in turn (T-Online) can call my parents, but not me.
So the three phone companies use different phone number assignment tables.
We can only hope that they will soon be able to match them again, and compensate the customers appropriately. Whether this is due to a hacker attack, I guess we’ll never know…
For two days now, we’ve been getting calls on our cell phone, no one answers, but when we try to reach this lousy guy – even via the landline – we’re generally told: the number you’ve dialed is unfortunately not in service…
Got pictures (all decent pictures) via Whatsapp. Now I have called the Nr, but it says: The Nr is not assigned.
How can it be, if a number is not assigned and you still get pictures from there?.
Can someone help me
It can also be sent via WLAN, so you don’t necessarily need a SIM card. And if the account on WhatsApp is logged in with the number, it takes a while for the app to notice if the sim card has been deactivated or cancelled.
