How to write a good report?

What is a report and what types of reports are there??

So now you know some common examples of reports. In school, however, especially in the lower and middle grades, you learn the classical report, a factual account of an event (e.g., a story).B. of an accident or an event at school).

In contrast to poem interpretation, reports are also well suited for lower or middle school, since they are not so long and are usually easier to write. Also, you don’t have to do a lot of analyzing, interpreting, or weighing arguments (as in the discussion) or forming your own opinion on a topic.

You should keep this in mind when you start writing your report.

The report, like other essay forms (e.g.B. the interpretation) also from Introduction, main part and conclusion. However, these are usually much shorter and not as clearly marked as in other types of school essays.

Introduction

In the introduction, you first answer these W questions in one or two short sentences:

  • When?
  • Where?
  • What?
  • Who?

This is important so that your reader knows right away what the report is about and whether he/she is interested in reading it.

So, a report introduction might read as follows: "On Thursday, the 5th of March, you were in the hospital. July at 5 p.m., there was a collision between a 16-year-old female bicyclist and a 10-year-old child on a scooter in Lilienstrabe."

main part

The next step is the main part.

In the main part of your report, you then introduce the What? a little more precisely and elaborate on it by pointing to the How? and Why? Reply.

It might sound like this: "The 10-year-old boy was on his way home and about to cross the crosswalk near his home when the female bicyclist approached from the left and slammed into the boy. She didn’t see him because she was looking at her smartphone while driving. There was a collision and both parties fell. A passerby immediately stopped and helped the accident victims off the road."

Conclusion

Finally, in the conclusion of your report, you go into how the incident was resolved (if you already know that) and what the consequences are. The classic W-questions are already answered, but now the reader might ask: "What happens next??" or "What happened afterwards?". In our case z.B. "Is the child doing well?" "What about the youth?" "Is the child hurt?"

In the last step you should answer and explain these questions with your text, what the consequences of the incident are, for example: "The child is in shock, but has only suffered minor abrasions. The teenager suffered a mild concussion, but was able to leave the hospital the same evening."

tips& Tricks around the topic report

Finally, we would like to give you some tips on how to write a good text in German when the topic is "Writing a report" or maybe even "write a newspaper report" is.

The most important thing, of course, is to use clear, objective language, i.e. always remain factual. After all, it is a factual reproduction of an event. The point is purely to inform those who read your report, not to entertain them or build suspense in any way.

This means that words have absolutely no place in the report have! Even if you yourself have an attitude to what has happened (z.B. shock, grief or joy), one must not notice that in your reporting.

So avoid words like great, nice, crass, bad, mega, natural and phrasing like "In my opinion . ", "I think, . " "I find, . " etc.

The only exception is the travelogue, where it is logical that it is about your personal experience that you want to share with your family or friends/followers.

And the internship report is also a small exception here, but only in the introduction and in the conclusion. At the beginning you can mention, for example, why you are interested in a certain profession, how the application process was for you, etc. In the conclusion, you can give a small summary of your experience and explain if and why you liked the internship (or why not).

And while we’re on the subject of language: A factual style often means using very factual words that you wouldn’t use in everyday language. Have you noticed such words in the examples above? Exactly, I am of course talking about terms like "involved parties", "Accident victim", "Passerby", but also typical verbs and expressions like "verunfallen, "damage", "suffer injuries".

Especially in road traffic there are many such words.

So, to prepare for a class assignment, it is worthwhile to read a newspaper report (or several newspaper reports) – in the newspaper or online on news portals (z.B. the online portal of the local newspaper or even national newspapers like the FAZ) – and mark such words or. to write out. If you use them in your essay, your teacher will be impressed!

In addition, when writing a report, you should also Pay attention to the correct tense. Since this is a past event, you should use the past tense. If you refer to events in the past, you have to use the Plusquamperfect use.

Like for example above: "She had not seen him because she had looked at her smartphone while driving." Since the collision is in the past tense and the fact that she missed it because she was looking at her cell phone is on the timeline before it, this sentence must be in the past perfect tense, i.e. the antecedent.

By the way: Reports are written also gladly already as essay in the elementary school, however it concerns thereby often subjective experience reports.
